Chit Chat / Hi Bruce

Hello Bruce,

Good to see you are here.  You will be a great resource for the folks here with problems.

I can tell all of you that Bruce is one hell of a good dealer/mechanic who does what he says he will do.  If he says he will send you a part you will get it if he can get it.   When he gives you advise, you can go to the bank on it.

You don't say where you are located and I have not seen one of these in the U.S so I can't say if it is a genuine "American Lifan".  However you can try this guy in Northern Ohio.  He is a Lifan dealer.

How To / Re: Throttle cable adjustment
« on: November 16, 2009, 04:33:14 PM »
There is or at least should be an idle adjustment screw on the carb.  If you look in the direction of the carb while you twist the throttle it will be apparent where the adjustment screw is.  Now days many idle mixture screws are covered or sealed at the factory to ensure emissions compliance and therefore cannot be adjusted.

Hope that helps,

LF250 / Re: Bad Running Fix

Catrinus,

What you have essentually done is close the choke.  Another words, you don't have too much air (that's impossible) the problem is you don't have enough gas.  Assuming you have adequate flow from the tank to the carb, take the carb off, take it apart and really clean it out.  I would say that without a doubt, your main jet is somewhat clogged.  Although I did not have the problem you discuss, I hear that it is fairly common and more often than not it is crap in the bowl and jets.  Also check the vacuum fuel shut off (some take it off) and make sure the lines are run properly from the tank all the way to the carb since I hear many times they are not from the factory.  Before you do anything though, take out your air restrictor and let it breathe.

I just happened to think of something else.  You might also want to check the rubber manafold and all it's connections to the cylinders and carb.  You could have a vacuum leak there that could be artifically improved by choking.  Fire it up and spray some WD 40 all around the area and see what happens.  The rpms should go up and you should see some smoke from the exhaust.  If either occurs, that's your problem.

LF250 / Re: Lifan LF 250 workshop manual

PyroMann,

I have never heard of a Lifan made anywhere other than China.  Not to say they aren't, I just  never heard of one.  If it is an LF250, then yes the Yamaha manual should be at the very least close.  No doubt something is hanging up in the gear box.  You might just have to pull the case off and take a peak.

Just my opinion. :)

LF250 / Re: rear sprocket
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:58:32 AM »
Around here we consider normal cruising somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 mph.  The stock sprocket will let me go 70 mph but I think these little bikes are just a bit light for that rate of speed.  I did it once and that was all I needed.  My MPG consistantly runs around 70 so I am quite happy.

LF250 / Re: Oil Filter?
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:54:19 AM »
Hi guys,

I have changed the oil lots of times on mine and as Art says the filter is under a cover on the right side that is held on with three allen head screws.  I have never replaced it though because it is easily cleaned with a mild solvent (mineral sprits) and then blown out with compressed air.  It is sealed with an "O" ring that is also reuseable.  I have never seen any cruddy materials in mine though.

wencra,

You will love this little bike.  I have an LF250 myself and it takes a while to get the smile off my face everytime I ride it.   Like stryder said, let us know how you like it and shoot us some pics when you have a chance.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that you can see mine in the pics & Video section below.  I have made lots of changes since those were taken.  I'll have to post some of the new ones sometime.

LF250 / Re: Lifan 250 starter good but acts dead
« on: February 14, 2009, 01:39:27 PM »
The switch itself went bad on mine on the way home from the dealer when I first bought it.  They replaced it and I haven't had a problem since.  It's fairly easy to check out with a test light.  Check the small wire on the starter to see if you have current there when you hit the button.  Also, check out all the connections on the wire harness.  The Chinese are NOT known for having the best connectors.

Keep us posted on your progress.

It may have a Lifan engine but Lifan does not offer a chopper.

Chit Chat / Re: engine oil recomendation
« on: September 25, 2008, 04:09:02 PM »
There are a lot opinions out there on this subject and most state that you should an oil that is rated for motorcycles.  American Lifan recommends Castrol MC oil but agree any brand will do.  All I can find in my immediate area is Valvoline brand and I have used it.  I also understand that Shell Rotella T has run the test and is also suitable although it does not say that on the label.  I think they are more interested in marketing to diesel engines than a comparative hand full of motorcycles.  Since I have a Cummins diesel in my truck and always have Rotella T on hand I have chosen to use it in my LF250.  I now have 2000 miles on it with no clutch problems and it always looks clear when I change it.  Just my opinion though.
