Chit Chat / WHERE ARE THE NEWEST DUAL SPORT BIKES????
« on: February 18, 2011, 04:52:30 PM »
Hey!  We are coming into 2011 and still no news on the lastest and greatest Dual sport to replace the GY-5?  I've seen some pictures of pretty trick looking dual sport machines coming from China.  What's up Lifan? My '06 GY-5 needs a new stable mate!

Guys,

You can always go through Red Oak cycles in Texas for OEM stuff.  They are right next to Lifan America.  Mike down there is fantastic.  Also, look up Lifan parts or Chineses dirt bike parts on google and you'll come up with a few places that sell pieces that will work.

AS for stuff breaking or falling off... Preparation is key.  BEFORE you go out riding the snots out of the GY-5 you need to give it a good once over and lock tight stuff or safety wire it.  These GY-5's are NOT intended for jumping, You'll snap your frame or break the swing arm.  They are a good budget dual sport that can take you where you want to go if you ride with care and keep on top of maintenance.

I picked up a neglected 2006 last year for $400.00.  Took it all apart, fixed what I could, replaced what I had to and rode the snot out of it for another 3500 miles over last season here in New England.  See picture attached.  I've had minor issues with it, but they were very minor.  For example, the cheesy little chrome plate on the header pipe, one of the attach brackets broke off.  Removed it.  Looks better with out it anyway.  One luggage rack tab broke from frame, too much weight on rack. Solution, Frame is at welders getting those brackets reinforced, along with beefing up rear motor mounts and skid plate.  However, when she goes back together in another week, she'll be mint again and should get me 5-6000 miles this season.

Here's a few shots of a 2005 LF200gy-5 I picked up for $400.00 in spring '09.  The bike had 4300 miles on it.  I registered it here in Massachusetts with no issues at all. I ride mostly on the road, but like to be able to rip off the pavement at any whim.  I've gotten the bike up to about 75 miles an hour by tucking as close to tank and front fairing as possible.  No complaints, except it vibrates like a banshee, but that's a thumper for you!  I put 3500 miles on it last year.  Was into it for about $750.00 with paint (not counting my time).  Did a tear down/ overhaul in Winter ,09.  Painted frame and changed lights, rings, valve springs, clutch parts, gaskets, chain, etc... Probably into it for close to a grand now.  How can you beat that?

I've had some other bikes that cost more, and for the money, this thing rocksand it's ton's of fun!
